Living in the last days of ancient Atlantis, Mari strives to make choices that are best for her and her people. Her story is told against a backdrop of deception and intrigue as she becomes entangled in the power struggles between her people and the rulers of the City of the Golden Gates.

Events collide and she is forced to take on a momentous task, one that tests her love and trust in the traditions of her people and in those who are dearest to her: her mother, and the young man she loves. Mari believes she has failed the task and struggles to overcome her feelings of grief, guilt, and betrayal that threaten her very survival.

My Review
This story had a feel of soul to it, and no wonder as this seemed to be set in an era of tribal communities.

There were Hill People, huts made of wood, clothes made out of Ilama hides. Circles where the Elders have their meetings. Some of the people even talked telapathicly.

I loved how the landscape descriptions blended into the story without being too intrusive.... it just slipped nicely in the background.

I also loved the illustration on each chapter, not sure what it was, a badge, or emblem, I don't know, but it reminded me of those old fashioned brass buttons you could get.

The overall feel to the book was fascinating, and a very intense exciting towards the end. Dramatic scenes to do with Mari's mother was quite heartbreaking and the author gave me a sense of sorrow through these. There was a little bit of history, but not too much, and very intriguing on how the City of the Golden Gates was founded. Although I don't know much about Atlantis, there also seems to be quite alot written about crystals .... food for thought there.

All in all, I'm giving this book a 5 star review and would suit readers who are into Historical Fantasy. Stephanie H Hammond resides in Hamilton, New Zealand and has a number of books written in different genres, so if this doesn't entice you, maybe check to see what else may appeal to you.
